I need to settle on what wood floors I want to install.?

I currently have a large, open living room with red walls on three sides. My furniture has dark woods, with some gold trimming and pillows around the place. The furniture is traditional/rustic and I want to know what would be a good color for hardwoods. I have seen many rooms with a light wood for a red room, but we were looking into a medium/dark Hickory. This will be a lot of money so I don’t want to make the wrong decision. Any ideas?

Flooring will last many more years than your furniture. I would decide on the flooring you love. Hickory is one of my favourite flooring choices…really very beautiful. I have medium dark hardwood in my home and it matches well with all my pieces…antique and contemporary in all colours There is enough grain in the flooring that will give you a great variety of colouring to match all coloured woods. Hickory is very expensive, but you will have this floor much longer than your furniture…decide on what you want and furniture can always be changed. If you are really concerned with this, then bring home a sample in the colour you want and lay it on the floor against your furniture. You will know if you like the two together or not.

My opinion is dont have the floor match the furniture too close. It will look like a muddied mess, especially in dim lighting. Go perhaps between your lightest accessory and your darkest furniture. Watch and keep your contrasts good. Your furniture is your center piece, so dont loose them in a dark sea of wood flooring.

I just saw the coolest hardwood flooring on tv. It was a 2 toned bamboo flooring. You get both the light colors and med dark colors. It was very different, but not that overwhelming.
